Cool!! :) I love the tripod fighting machines from The War of The Worlds. I tend to imagine them as being coppery-brass colored, and moving with an almost organic animal-like manner, while using its lithe mechanical tentacles to fire heat-ray projectors and handle the rocket tubes the fire the black smoke shells (not to mention catch hapless humans). HG Wells originally imagined the fighting-machines moving with a fluid, animal like action rather than the clunkiness of a steam boiler on stilts. The Martians used stacks of electrically charged disks to simulate the contractions of muscles, if I recall the books correctly- which is remarkably close to modern robotics and artificial muscles. As was his description of a heat-ray. Modern infrared lasers behave pretty much identically. Chemical weapons we have had since WW1. Maybe WE are the Martians... =P

Haha, I might use some of this myself. I've never read the book unfortunately, I've listened to both the musical and non-musical dramatisations though. I'm a bit fed up of the tripods though so I might design some spaceships to go along side it, or maybe the race itself.

Feel free- or, better yet, read the original book!! It is one of the earliest and most important alien invasion novels ever written. :) In addition to the tripod fighting machines, the Martians built crab-like working machines that constructed the fighting-machines and some sort of flying-machine. The spaceships were cylinders that were fired from some sort of huge gun on Mars, much like the Columbiad from Jules Verne's From the Earth to the Moon- once they (crash)landed one Earth in a big crater, the Martians unscrewed the back of cylinder after waiting for the surface of the cylinder to cool. Then they came out and established a base of operations in the crater. The Martians themselves were about the size of a bear, walked on numerous tentacles, and possessed one quivering, palpitating beak that continually quivered and pulsated. They drank the blood of native humanoids on Mars, and were ready to switch a diet of human blood until the native bacteria on Earth gave them a come-uppance. So, there are plenty of things other than fighting-machines to paint. I always found it interesting that the Martians, advanced as they were in space travel, chemical weapons, and energy-weapons, would probably fall before a modern army equipped with tanks, jet fighters, atomic weapons, and germ warfare...

That's awesome.

Dakota Fanning was the girl in War of the Worlds. Hurts my head a bit that you were young enough when that film came out to consider yourself a kid :noes: I was probably about as old as you are now. The film made me feel about eight years old though :P

I swear she's the poster child for creepy/terrified children.

Time passes too quickly. I still think ten years ago was the 90s.

Haha, me too. I have a hard time believing that anyone born in the early 90s can be fully grown now.
